10 Concepts: The Early Years
La Leche League is founded on a philosophy summarized in ten concept statements which all LLL Leaders hold dear.
In a series of poems Alison puts her interpretation of our beliefs into verse. Here is the third.
Concept three: In the early years the baby has an intense need to be with his mother which is as basic as his need for food.
The Early Years
In the early years, a baby needs a mother
no other is quite the same, it’s no game,
beginning to live on the outside,
and a mother has so much to give.
In the early years, connection is so important,
for protection, salving fears wiping tears,
being the world for someone so small,
in need of closeness, a guiding hand,
but understand that’s not all, oxytocin’s
a wonderful gift, the hormone of love,
to bond you close and happy, even when nappies
spiral beyond control and overflow,
just breathe love in, and take it slow.
