Sharing our community cloud.
The theme for the La Leche League Massachusetts/Rhode Island/Vermont Area Conference this year was “Building Community for 60 Years.” In keeping with this theme, the conference organizers decided to create a community building exercise as one of the activities for the event. We wanted to take some time throughout the day to reflect on what our own LLL communities mean to us.
LLL serves as a link in communities to connect mothers to other mothers and to resources they may need to help them be successful breastfeeding their babies. A person’s LLL experience might be regular meetings, playgroups, online communities, or simply a shared passion for supporting families on their breastfeeding journeys.
These LLL links cover a lot of ground! We connect locally, are part of a larger Area, and extend globally with La Leche League communities in countries all over the world. These connections span not only long distances over space but also over time, from the beginnings of LLL almost 60 years ago right up to today and moving on into the future.
So we asked the question, “What does your La Leche League community mean to you?” We invited all of the moms, dads, Leaders, community members, and the children too to think about the words or phrases they would use to describe their positive experiences and associations from being a part of the LLL community. We knew that many of the people would choose the same words or phrases!
Conference attendees were invited to jot down the words and phrases on the blank side of some colorful paper strips. We then collected all of the strips to make a giant paper chain that was a fun visual of how far our links with LLL stretch and connect. The paper chain went on display afterward so everyone could see and read what others had written.
Our plan all along was to take the responses and turn them into a word cloud that would arrange the words according to the frequency that they came up and provide us with a graphic image of just what our community is built on.
We are delighted with the result and are pleased to share this community cloud with everyone! You can download it from our Facebook. We invite LLL community members all over to use the image as signage for their Series Meetings, conferences, exhibit tables, or as profile pictures on social media.
Spread the LLLove.
